REAL AZ REGIONS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Diversity of Northeast Arizona

Northeast Arizona is known for its diverse landscapes, it’s rich Native American heritage, the strong community ties, and its array of opportunities for both large industry and small businesses.

Our Coal Communities

Coal communities are communities and regions that have, or had, a coal fired power plant, coal mining operations, or related transportation, logistics, and/or supply chain manufacturing industries related to coal energy production operating or closing within the past decade. There is no standard definition of what a coal community is, but using the Economic Development Agencies criteria for assessing these communities – we can confidently say that Navajo and Apache counties are coal impacted communities.

Coal communities have a cultural heritage of pride, supplying power to millions of Americans homes and businesses. This heritage has carried on as they embrace new methods of energy production and storage – from utility scale solar and wind to innovative battery storage technology. These communities have a skilled workforce familiar with the industry and essential infrastructure assets (multi-modal transportation networks, power transmission lines, heavy operating equipment) that provide opportunity for new industry.
