The 4FRI Program

Apache and Navajo Counties in Arizona are home to significant forest resources, including marketable timber and biomass. These resources are managed and restored through various initiatives, including the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) and the tribally managed forest on Fort Apache.

Collaborative
Effort

The 4FRI is a collaborative effort among federal, state, tribal, and local stakeholders to restore the forest ecosystem in portions of Coconino, Kaibab, Apache-Sitgreaves, and Tonto National Forests along the Mogollon Rim in Northern Arizona. It aims to address the issues of overgrown and unhealthy forests, the risk of catastrophic wildfires, and the need for forest restoration.

Forest Stewardship Contracts

As part of the 4FRI, forest stewardship contracts are utilized to manage and restore the forests in Apache and Navajo Counties. These contracts involve public-private partnerships where companies are awarded contracts to thin the forests, remove excess vegetation, and perform restoration work. The marketable timber harvested from these contracts helps support the local economy while promoting healthier forest ecosystems.
